Geocaching
Mar 6th, 2008 by Lance
Our family has been Geocaching since May 2004. We have found caches in
4 7 states (recently adding Illinois and Indiana to our states that we have cached in!) and hidden 1 cache here in West Salem!
What is Geocaching?
Geocaching is an entertaining adventure game for gps users. Participating in a cache hunt is a good way to take advantage of a gps unit. The basic idea is that individuals and organizations have set up caches all over the world and shared the locations of these caches on the internet. GPS users can then use the location coordinates to find the caches. Once found, a cache may provide the visitor with a wide variety of rewards. All the visitor is asked to do is if they get something they should try to leave something for the cache.
We have found caches at rest areas along the interstate, in the marsh, on the bike trails, on the sides of cliffs, deep in the forest, and far out in the grassy plains of South Dakota! They are hidden in very easy to find places and in very challenging and hard to imagine places. We have gone to and seen places that we would never have seen or thought to have gone to without the sport of Geocaching.
What are the rules in Geocaching?
Geocaching is a relatively new phenomenon. Therefore, the rules are very simple:
1. If you take something from the cache, leave something in the cache
2. Write a note in the logbook to record your visit for others to read about
Many Geocachers also practice CITO or “Cache In Trash Out” to help clean up our environment.
Most of all, have a good time caching and take your family with you!
